<h2>Unique Mothers Day Presents</h2><p>by AureliaM.Fleur</p>The first time Mother's Day was celebrated was June 2, 1872.  A suffragette named Julia Ward Howe founded "Mother's Day For Peace."   The point of the event was originally pretty close to the chant of "Give Peace a Chance" taken up a century later.   In this instance, "Mother" represented both the person who gave birth, and the feelings of comfort and joy associated with that person.  The day kept these multiple meanings for several decades.  After the turn of the century, it became closer to the event we recognize today.<br /><br />Ann Reeves Jarvis was another woman who made significant contributions to society through organizing women to improve conditions in their communities. Her daughter Anna campaigned for a national holiday honoring mothers after she passed away. Woodrow Wilson approved the holiday in 1914, and since then has been celebrated annually every second Sunday of May.<br /><br />Jarvis, who never became a mother herself, did not intend for Mother's Day to be a commercial affair. She favored sentiment to commercialism. As the holiday became more and more associated with gift giving, she began to speak out against the practice. Many people would send flowers to their mothers as they do today. Even this did not sit well with Jarvis. She spent the rest of her life reminding people that the holiday was about the sentiments that should be given to mothers, and not the gifts.<br /><br />Many people spend time with their mothers to commemorate the holiday. Some people who live too far away and cannot visit so easily, send their mothers Mother's Day flowers. Some people know what flowers their mothers like, and tend to choose those. Others choose flowers that have a special meaning.<br /><br />Finding the perfect Mother's Day present is a task enjoyed by many children. Fathers and children often spend quality time together looking for these special gifts. Typical Mother's Day gifts include jewelry, perfume, flowers, books, and collectibles.<br /><br />Jarvis did not intend the holiday to take on so much unintended significance. Although the day is not celebrated as she had initially intended, her goal of creating a holiday based around honoring mothers was still accomplished.
