Every country in the world with the exception of Malta and the Philippines has legalized divorce. Although divorce is not recognized as a legal dissolution of marriage in these countries, they do permit annulment of marriages. With an annulment the declaration of marriage is void but the affects of marriage are still accepted.

To remove the past official act of wedding the divorce has to be certified as a legal action by a court. The court will decide the terms taking into account any contracts signed by both parties at the time of marriage or before. These are known as prenuptial or postnuptial agreements.
Most of the time, the spouses disagree about the terms of the divorce, which can lead to expensive and stressful court litigation. More cooperative approaches to separation settlements have recently been introduced, such as mediation and collaborative wedlock dissolution, which negotiate mutual acceptance of resolution to conflicts.

Religious beliefs, whether it is one persons beliefs that affect the marriage or if neither part can reconcile their beliefs to the spouse's can also end a marriage. Sometimes the dissolution occurs not because of a physical, or financial problem that the couple sees no way around, sometimes the cause can be for mental health illness or instability.

Divorce takes what was once one household and makes it two with increased costs of what it previously was. The increase in finances can cause a strain on the family and one or both may end up suffering additional hardships. Financial considerations to take into account when planning a divorce include spousal support, alimony, child support and custody, and replacing property that was divided up after the divorce became final. There are also the bills that accrued during the marriage and costs of the divorce itself that will have to be considered.
